Students from Our Lady’s
College were competing in the Northern Ireland Young Scientist Exhibition and
achieved some awards in recognition for all their efforts. All students had previously entered their
projects in the RDS in January 2012, at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition,
where they also won awards. They then
completed further work and research for their Belfast entry and at the awards
ceremony all were presented with Category, Special or Grand awards.
Niamh Cunningham was
awarded runner-up in the Junior 11-14 age category. Her project investigated
new number sequences from the Fibonacci Numbers. Niamh was also awarded the Queens University
Award for Mathematics in recognition of excellence in Mathematics,for which she
received a trophy and a cash prize.
Aoibh Collier and
Caroline O’Connor were in the Intermediate Category (ages15-16) and were
awarded one of the Grand Awards- that of Northern Ireland Young Scientist
Overall Winner 2012. They presented their project “An investigation into which
type of waste bag breaks down fastest.” To more than 14 judges throughout the
day from Queen’s University, Belfast,
University of Ulster and Northern Ireland Environmental Agencies. This
prestigious award was won previously by Greenhills past-pupil, Eliza Matthews,
albeit when the event was much smaller.
